Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)
Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)
Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) is a widely used non-destructive testing method designed to detect surface-breaking defects in both ferrous and non-ferrous materials. At Assessfie, our PT inspections reveal cracks, porosity, laps, seams, and other surface discontinuities that may not be visible to the naked eye. By combining experienced inspectors, approved penetrant systems, and controlled inspection conditions, we ensure accurate and repeatable results without damaging the component.
How Liquid Penetrant Testing Works
- The test surface is thoroughly cleaned to remove contaminants.
- A liquid penetrant (visible or fluorescent) is applied and allowed to seep into surface-breaking defects.
- Excess penetrant is carefully removed from the surface.
- A developer is applied, drawing trapped penetrant out of defects to form visible indications.
- Certified PT inspectors interpret the indications against acceptance criteria and issue a detailed inspection report.

Liquid Penetrant Testing Applications in the Oil & Gas Industry
Liquid Penetrant Testing is commonly used across upstream, midstream, and downstream operations where surface integrity is critical. Typical applications include:
Weld Inspection — Detection of surface cracks, porosity, and lack of fusion in welds
Pressure Vessels & Storage Tanks — Inspection of weld toes, nozzles, and attachments
Valves, Flanges & Fittings — Surface flaw detection in cast and forged components
Structural Steel & Fabrication — Inspection of plates, joints, and load-bearing members
Heat Exchangers & Boilers — Surface defect detection in tube sheets and welds
Maintenance & Shutdown Inspections — Identification of service-induced cracking
Weld Repair Verification — Confirmation of defect removal after grinding or repair welding
Standards & Regulations
Our Liquid Penetrant Testing services strictly comply with international standards and industry best practices to ensure reliable and globally accepted results.
