Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT)
Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT)
Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is an advanced non-destructive testing technique that provides high-resolution imaging and precise characterization of flaws in welds and materials. At Assessfie, our PAUT services deliver accurate detection, sizing, and positioning of defects such as cracks, lack of fusion, lack of penetration, and corrosion. By using multi-element probes and computerized beam steering, we provide superior inspection coverage compared to conventional ultrasonic testing.
How Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing Works
- A phased array probe containing multiple ultrasonic elements is placed on the test surface.
- Individual elements are pulsed with controlled timing (phasing) to steer and focus the ultrasonic beam.
- The beam sweeps through the material at multiple angles without moving the probe.
- Reflected signals are captured and displayed as sectorial or linear scans, which are interpreted by certified PAUT inspectors to generate detailed inspection reports.
Technologies & Techniques We Use
- Sectorial (S-Scan) and Linear Scanning
- Weld Inspection with Multi-Angle Beam Steering
- Phased Array Corrosion Mapping
- Manual and Semi-Automated PAUT Systems
- Advanced Imaging and Data Recording
- Portable PAUT systems for field and offshore inspections
Phased Array UT Applications in the Oil & Gas Industry
PAUT is widely used across upstream, midstream, and downstream operations due to its accuracy, speed, and detailed imaging capability. Typical applications include:
Pipeline Weld Inspection — Girth welds, tie-ins, and repair welds
Pressure Vessels & Storage Tanks — Shell welds, nozzle attachments, and critical joints
Structural Steel & Fabrication — Detection of planar defects in thick sections
Offshore & Marine Structures — Weld inspection in jackets, risers, and load-bearing components
Heat Exchangers & Boilers — Weld and component integrity assessment
In-Service Inspection — Monitoring defect growth without interrupting operations
Weld Repair Verification — Accurate sizing and confirmation of defect removal
Standards & Regulations
Our Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing services comply with international standards and industry codes to ensure accuracy, reliability, and global acceptance.
