Long Range Ultrasonic Testing (LRUT)
Long Range Ultrasonic Testing (LRUT)
Long Range Ultrasonic Testing (LRUT) is an advanced non-destructive testing technique used to screen long lengths of pipelines from a single test location. At Assessfie, our LRUT services enable rapid detection of corrosion, erosion, and metal loss in piping systems—both above ground and buried—without the need for extensive access, excavation, or insulation removal. LRUT is an efficient solution for integrity assessment of critical pipeline networks.
How Long Range Ultrasonic Testing Works
- A ring of transducers is clamped around the pipe circumference.
- Low-frequency ultrasonic guided waves are generated and transmitted along the pipe in both directions.
- Reflections occur when the waves encounter corrosion, wall loss, welds, or other features.
- Certified LRUT inspectors analyze signal reflections to identify areas of concern and recommend targeted follow-up inspections.
Technologies & Techniques We Use
- Guided Wave Ultrasonic Testing (GWUT)
- Axial and Torsional Wave Modes
- Screening of Buried, Sleeved, and Insulated Pipelines
- Long-Range Corrosion Detection
- Portable LRUT systems for field and offshore inspections
- Data Interpretation and Risk-Based Screening Reports
LRUT Applications in the Oil & Gas Industry
LRUT is widely used across upstream, midstream, and downstream operations where access to pipelines is limited. Typical applications include:
Onshore Pipelines — Screening long sections from a single access point
Buried Pipelines — Detection of corrosion without excavation
Insulated Pipelines — Inspection without removing insulation
Pipe Racks & Road Crossings — Assessment of hard-to-access areas
Offshore Pipelines — Screening of topside and riser sections
Refineries & Process Plants — Integrity assessment of piping networks
Asset Integrity Programs — Early detection and prioritization of high-risk areas
Standards & Regulations
Our Long Range Ultrasonic Testing services comply with recognized international standards and industry guidelines to ensure reliable and globally accepted results.
